Jimmy for a long time was a big mover on games in Vegas and was managing the Mirage, then maybe the most influential book in the world. No one complained about it back then.

because the limits are so low on what you can bet compared to years ago. these days if you want to bet more than like $2,000 on a game, you basically are looked at like you have 3 heads. also, when you place that bet, they will then move the line before the let you bet it again. a lot of it is due to corporations putting the reigns on books and making them all so vanilla. it also hurts that every book knows what every other book in town has as a line for the game - so the odds of finding a 2.5 when other places have 3 is slim. being original is now something that will get a sportsbook director killed by "higher up". all vegas really wants now is Joe Public to come in and bet teams like the dallass cowgirls, notre dame, yankees, lakers and a few other public teams all the time. god forbid someone comes in and bets the other side seeing the value in doing so! oh, yeah, vegas also wants people flocking to vegas to bet the cubs to win the WS - which is why the posted lines - and the real lines are 2 different things. the books KNOW people will bet the cubs every year so instead of getting what should be, say, 50-1 to win the WS, the books will only offer 35-1 or 40-1 since they know no matter what the number - they will get a ton of action on them anyway - so why not save some risk.

vegas is still a great place to watch a game - spending a football weekend or the first weekend of the ncaa gives a GREAT atmospphere and is something people should do for the stroies to tell later - but if you are seriously into betting - avoid vegas.

the day after t-giving 2002 - i go to a vegas sports book and ask if they have 1st half lines for nba games. they told me they didn't - but after football ends - maybe they would. imagine an offshore book w/o a 1st half line? think they would stay in business very long? me, neither.

Winky....pretty much right on about the Vegas scene....

Why bet in Vegas when you can have multiple outs available online in the stroke of a few buttons.....bookmarks and multiple computers help out, also.

Give your business to a handful of well run offshores with first and second half lines, overnight lines......let the rest go the way of the dinosaur.....

Let the offshores know what you want to bet by WHERE you bet....

True WildBill, he and his brother are both fine persons, that care about people, are well liked by those that know them, and he was very pleasant on the occasions that I had talk with him at the counter.

P.S. One would be crazy not to play hand over fist with the smart-marks flying into the Mirage back then..the local wiseguys playing openers, local phone-accounts w/weekly renewals by the big-boys,, plus sharps firing into that phone bank from around the USA via local phone lines..the good old days before Vegas SB's went passe'.

Are you are thinking Sonny Vaccaro, the high school hoops guru/promoter? Jimmy obviously couldn't get involved in anything like that. I never heard, are those two related or just the same name?

Jimmy is a nice guy and hey can you blame him getting paid to run a book while having a cushy life in the Bahamas? That is the stuff you dream about. Jimmy would take just about any bet, he was nothing like the current guys. Then again Stevie Wynn sure knows the value of having a top sports book and poker room, unlike the corporate hands in charge. I am really looking forward to his new place, maybe between him and the Poster Boys bringing up the standards of their book and bringing back Eric Drache to the poker room there is some hope for at least a modest reemergence of quality options for sports bettors and poker players. It won't be like it was, but it certainly could be better.

Sonny is his brother, thus why JV has occasional inside hoop-scoop is due to Sonny's hoops contacts, also his own friendships with many Pittsburgh & UNLV sports types..both know a zillion people.

Any protege of Pittsburgh Jack, is gonna be sharp and a player!

But does Art Manteris play?

I never really knew Manteris at all. My "era" closely involved in the sports betting side was his time at the Hilton and who didn't avoid that joint? I find it almost hard to believe that the Hilton might, just might, be a reasonable out with Jay moving over.

WB, for all the bad remarks here by many about the SuperHilton, I actually like the place, it's side door & lot, it's plush seats, even it's dark cave atmosphere(okay..maybe a lil' too dark), as my biggest gripe was the lack of betting windows sometimes at post.

LeMontrachet & Benihana are both great, and though Art and his protege Chuck, rarely ever came out from their phone-bank action to work upfront, their subs gave out comps when asked.

I suppose if I watched more games I could come to like it more, but that stupid system of posting lines and scores on the rolling TV screens just pissed the hell out of me. If you happen to be there and want a score, the staff never seems to know and tell you to check out Headline News or ESPN ticker on one of the screens. Kind of annoying if you find yourself there on a Saturday.

Saw a Steven Nover article on Jay's hiring at MW, you can bet Jay will get that place up to speed, and petition it's bosses to allow it to be a player again.

Sonny isnt the most noble character, with the Myron Piggie connection. Sonny has been caught pimping young kids to agents and the highest bidding programs. Jimmy is a somewhat sharp handicapper, but has been known to give out favorable betting lines to cronys when he was at the Mirage. Both are slimeballs in my book.

Now Rail, those were openers offered to his biggest customers as number-shapers, that old slam against him as being in bed with Tiger or Poker gang is BS, he simply let the sharpest groups polish his numbers.

Steve Wynn is no dummy, do you think he would let a thief or moron run his shop all those years?

Old-school Vegas BMs and the biggest players were often from the same pool back then, knowing people from both sides of the counter isn't a crime, it's what every owner of a book should look for in a Manager.

As far as his brother, he makes a living in a slimier business than even gambling..I'm sure it hasn't been easy some of the decisions he has had to make?..But I can tell you he has a good heart & really cares for people according to what I've heard.

I've heard the same questions of both, and have heard great things of both, whom are we to say?

The Hilton Sportsbook is great for easy access and comfortable seating but that's it. For betting purposes it sucked. With Jay taking over at least you will see some props.
